Shoe reviews- Nike Flyknit One and Tod’s Gommino Driving Moccasins

Nike Flyknit One+

I am a huge fan of the Nike Flyknit. Ever since I first learned of the Flyknit Collective and saw the designs for the first time, it was love. I have two pairs of the original trainers and my husband has collected several pairs as well; including a pair from Oregon’s First2Fly event.

I’ve been waiting on the Flyknit One to come out for a while now. I saw a Nike rep wearing some samples a few months ago, in this crazy pink & black colorway. I loved the soles, with the speckles, and lunar bottoms. Everything pointed to a release date of February 14th.

Finish Line totally dropped the ball on this release; I guess they were supposed to have put out only two men’s colorways, the blue & chartreuse-looking one & the sequoias. I’ve been to several Finish Lines in the area that royally screwed up, so far I’ve seen half the colorways on the shelves including the volts, the black with blue laces, and the pink & whites. I don’t know if you’d be able to track them down there now, as Nike supposedly threatened to revoke their license if they didn’t pull them.

here are the pink & whites; in the background you can see some other colorways. on the floor you can see my husband’s sequoias.

The sizing for these is just as weird as the first run, the difference being some of them are sized in women’s sizing, as opposed to the last ones being completely men’s sizes. In the originals I am a 6-6.5 men’s (and I am usually a 5-5.5), in these I am a women’s 8, a half size up from what I usually am. Strangely enough the higher men’s sizes run true to size, it seems to just be the smaller ones that run extra small.

I ended up buying the pink & whites, I wore them for a day before deciding I hate them. The laces SUCK. They’re a new, more ribbonlike material and besides being too short, they come undone constantly. It’s also difficult to get new laces for them because of the eyelet design on the shoe. Overall they are just as, if not more comfortable than the previous design, but aesthetically, I think there’s just too much going on. There are too many colors, and the lunar soles make them look more like a regular running shoe. I constantly caught glimpses of neon pink all day, which annoyed the crap out of me. I like the more minimalist design of the trainers so much more….all the new ones look like IDs to me. I’m probably going to return these & grab a pair of the white trainers off of nike.com.

Tod’s Gommino Driving Moccasin

I’m not going to lie, I stalked these on the internet for quite some time before finally pushing the “buy” button (okay, I technically never did that- I had to order them over the phone, but you know). Not only are they a level 9000 on the expensive scale, I had never tried on a pair, or even seen them in person.

I tend to get really expensive things that are going to last a long time, rather than buying a bunch of disposable crappy stuff. That’s why I have a Mulberry handbag instead of some pleather Forever21 thing. I’ve never understood the idea of spending just as much over time for tons of poor quality things, as opposed to just getting one nice thing you’re not going to tire of. Right? It’s like buying horrible used cars where the bumpers fall off and the muffler falls out while you’re driving.

So, obviously I ordered them. I talked to a very nice sales associate that told me they ran true to size. I bought a size 7. When they arrived, my first impression was they were a bit stiff and a bit itchy from the “pony hair” which is actually calf hair if I recall correctly (they don’t use real pony hair- pony lovers fret not). I was determined to wear them, though, because I had just invested half my life savings into them.

They did not disappoint. I’m obsessed with them and wear them whenever I can. I would not recommend them for extremely long periods of walking, not because they aren’t comfortable (they totally are) but because the soles are not reinforced and just have the little driver-nubby things on them, and you don’t want to wear them down. I’ve worn mine quite a bit and the nubs have not worn down on the soles yet. They did stretch and the material no longer feels itchy to me. Overall, I’m very happy with this purchase- the only problem is, now I want other colors…

These are sold out in most department stores but can still be purchased here.Image

I thought my Jeffrey Campbell obsession was pricey. But I really like the look of these flats.

Now I want a pair, damnit!
